Vital dye immersion evaluations with juvenile delta smelt

چکیده
Abstract Immersion‐based vital dyes were tested as a marking method for use in larval smelt mark–recapture studies. We assessed five fluorescent mark juvenile osmerids: 4‐Di‐1‐ASP, BODIPY FL C12, 505/515, Nile red, and calcein. marked Delta Smelt, Hypomesus transpacificus , proxy Longfin Spirinchus thaleichthys to determine the efficacy of each batch technique osmerids based on dye performance survival. All groups Smelt including control exhibited high mortality (71%–100%, 5 days after trial), lowest survival was observed 4‐Di‐1‐ASP‐treated fish. Highest red‐ C12‐treated Fluorescence observations indicated that brightest, visible fluorescence seen calcein lesser extent, followed by C12 red. In addition performance, it is recommended immersion techniques improve be considered.

A juvenile-adult model with periodic vital rates.
A global branch of positive cycles is shown to exist for a general discrete time, juvenile-adult model with periodically varying coefficients. The branch bifurcates from the extinction state at a critical value of the mean, inherent fertility rate. In comparison to the autonomous system with the same mean fertility rate, the critical bifurcation value can either increase or decrease with the in...
متن کاملLosses of Sacramento River Chinook Salmon and Delta Smelt to Entrainment in Water Diversions in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta
Pumping at the water export facilities in the southern Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta kills fish at and near the associated fish-salvage facilities. Correlative analyses of salvage counts with population indices have failed to provide quantitative estimates of the magnitude of this mortality. I estimated the proportional losses of Sacramento River Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and del...
متن کاملImplications for Future Survival of Delta Smelt from Four Climate Change Scenarios for the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, California
Changes in the position of the low salinity zone, a habitat suitability index, turbidity, and water temperature modeled from four 100-year scenarios of climate change were evaluated for possible effects on delta smeltHypomesus transpacificus, which is endemic to the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. The persistence of delta smelt in much of its current habitat into the next century appears uncertai...
متن کاملLong-term Trends in Summertime Habitat Suitability for Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus)
The biological productivity of river-dominated estuaries is affected strongly by variation in freshwater inflow, which affects nursery habitat quality. Previous research has shown this is generally true in the upper San Francisco Estuary, California, USA; however, one endemic species of high management importance, delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), has shown ambiguous population responses ...
متن کاملSublethal responses to ammonia exposure in the endangered delta smelt; Hypomesus transpacificus (Fam. Osmeridae).
The delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) is an endangered pelagic fish species endemic to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Estuary in Northern California, which acts as an indicator of ecosystem health in its habitat range. Interrogative tools are required to successfully monitor effects of contaminants upon the delta smelt, and to research potential causes of population decline in this species. We...
